Kellner’s Slaughterhouse and Ice Dam

The photo above is of Kellner’s slaughterhouse around the 1950’s (Kellner’s slaughter is the big house in the far right behind the kids).
The Kellner’s ice dam and slaughterhouse was located at the north end of Pitt Street. Cattle, pigs, and lambs would come to Tamaqua mostly by train and were offloaded from cattle cars at the intersection of Rowe and Swatara Street. After that the animals would be herded through the streets to the slaughterhouse. The slaughterhouse operated until 1965.
